ABC World News Tonight with Diane Sawyer – Special Report “Made in America”
“Made in America” is suddenly trending.

ABC World News Tonight with Diane Sawyer just completed a terrific week long special on “Made in America.”  All week long their website, Facebook, Twitter accounts were all a buzz with chatter on the issue.  It certainly seemed to strike a chord with many Americans and shed some much needed light on a very important issue that we live, sleep, eat and breathe here at Made in USA Certified.

We want to say “Thank you” to ABC World News for the coverage as we couldn’t be more grateful to the sudden interest by main stream media on this very important & relevant topic.  Manufacturing is so critical to our countries prosperity and growth.  “Manufacturing supports an estimated 18.6 million jobs in the U.S. – about one in six private sector jobs.  Nearly 12 million Americans (or 9 percent of the workforce) are employed directly in manufacturing.”*Taken from the National Association of Manufacturers (http://www.nam.org/)

ABC in their in-depth week long special chronicled a family that wanted to re-do their home with all-American goods and the challenges they faced in doing so.  What they found as many of us have known- it is difficult to find “Made in USA” these days.  Most all of the big box stores we typically frequent are filled to the brim with products all NOT “Made in USA”.

So, for a typical consumer it can be daunting and time consuming to find items for your family and your home that are “Made in USA”……Possible???  YES!

ABC has a great source of video’s, information, articles, an interactive map, list of websites,  all located on their site:  World News- Made in America Series – This is a great place to start, if you missed this informative week long broadcast, you can catch each segment and more- here.

One of the things they found in their quest to furnish a home with all-American products is that “Made in USA” is thriving on-line.   Due to the fact that all the big box stores, have opted to go for lower priced outsourced goods in favor of larger profits—the “Made in USA” products have been driven to the on-line community where all most anything you could possibly want can be found on-line at one of the many websites containing- ‘Made in USA’ products.  To view a list of websites that ABC compiled go here: Made in America Resource Guide to Find American Companies

Another great resource is ABC’s interactive map: ABC Interactive Map- Where are the American Companies?

We encourage all of you to think about your purchases, try to Buy American when possible, speak to your local retailers- encourage them to sell more products ‘Made in USA’.

There’s no question that manufacturing still has a major impact on our economy and on the nation’s workforce. If every American spent an extra $3.33 on U.S.-made goods, it would create almost 10,000 new jobs in this country.  Take the ‘Made in America’ Pledge TODAY and support our U.S. manufacturers.

  1. Diane,
My wife and I are starting to be believers in ‘made in America’. Heck, we think that perhaps you should cut out all of your foreign news and just stick with news ‘made in America’. It’s a start!

    1. Did it take a college student to tell the nation that made in the USA was not our product that we could purchase. For the last three years I have wondered way we gave all the foreign countries all the manufacturing of product. W e act like we don’t know what has happened to America, that’s funny, HA HA, we have, we the people, let our country be taken from us in bits and pieces. WAKE UP AMERICA! Don’t but products from anywhere but USA. STOP, now buy, sell, manufacture in our country. Talk about jobs, people wake up. Our farms need to produce all our food, people if we keep on we will have to depend on other countries forn our food, THINK ABOUT THAT, people! Clean out DC, completely, what an difference that would make. WAKE UP AMERICA.

      1. Carole, I agree 100%, but we as a country are lazy! I can’t imagine living like the rest of countries we send food to for them to survive but that is were we are going, we are importing Mango’s from Costa Rica etc..I am blown away how we have sat back and allowed our country to be broken apart and sold to the highest bidder…we have lost our pride if everyone of us taught our children to read the labels on food why can’t we teach them to read the labels on clothes, shoes etc..they are hurting us too, they are taking our jobs and we are freely paying for it..it’s our money we hand over at the register! Somehow thats a dirty word in Congress…Boycott all foreign made products..What would our friends overseas say about us…It them they care for there reputation mean more to them not our children they have Congress by the balls..since they are paying our bills, we don’t want to piss them off..in the meantime no one is doing nothing about it..how can we just you and me make a difference…facebook it…tweet about it..how can we promote this just for one day, No Body buys nothing if it’s not made in the USA! This will never happen…we (you and I) have the best of intentions but we don’t have the resources to pull it off..if everyone tried they see it’s not so hard…and if you can’t find it you don’t really need it anyway.

  2. This was sent to me by a friend who lost her job in October. She had worked at the same place for 15 years….but no longer. Her company could not compete with the foreign imports…many of which were actually American companies who chose to have their items made overseas…..cheaper? I suppose so. But in a way, we, as comsumers are also to blame. We want the best bargain, i.e. cheapest, items we can find….who cares if John, Helen, Tom or Doreen, American citizens, will lose their jobs….obviously we don’t.

John Smith started the day early having set his alarm clock (MADE IN JAPAN ) for 6 am.

While his coffeepot (MADE IN CHINA) was perking, he shaved with his electric razor (MADE IN HONG KONG ).

He put on a dress shirt (MADE IN SRILANKA ), designer jeans (MADE IN SINGAPORE ) and tennis shoes (MADE IN KOREA).

After cooking his breakfast in his new electric skillet (MADE IN INDIA ) he sat down with his calculator (MADE IN MEXICO ) to see how much he could spend today.

After setting his watch (MADE IN TAIWAN) turning off his radio (MADE IN INDIA ) he got in his car (MADE IN GERMANY ) filled it with gas (FROM SAUDI ARABIA) and continued his search for a good paying AMERICAN JOB.

At the end of yet another discouraging and fruitless day of checking his computer (MADE IN MALAYSIA), John decided to relax for a while. He put on his sandals (MADE IN BRAZIL ) poured himself a glass of wine (MADE IN FRANCE ) and turned on his TV (MADE IN INDONESIA ), and then wondered why he can’t find a good paying job in AMERICA.

Do you see anything WRONG with this story? You should.

  3. We are a company that does Grading and Marking of Patterns for clothing designers. Our company is actively involved in Save the Garment Center, an organization that focuses on bringing clothing manufacturing back to America and bringing awareness to NYC that the landlords of this city can’t throw out an industry like ours which brings the city the most revenue during fashion week than any other event. People need to focus on keeping America from a total loss of what several generations worked so hard to accomplish and that is…. making America the strongest nation in the world. People need to be aware when they are purchasing from these large chains that these clothes are not being made in America and who really is making these clothes? BUY AMERICAN.. DEMAND YOUR STORES CARRY ITEMS MADE IN AMERICA OR DON’T SHOP THERE!

  4. I just wanted to share my latest mail item. It’s from St. Josephs Indian School in Chamberlain SD. I was sent return mail stickers, gift stickers and a “dreamcatcher” ornament like they ‘put up in every tipi’. The letter states..”Once, their nation was proud and strong. Now they are the poorest of America’s poor”. I would not have a problem helping the Lakota people out – except for the fact that their dreamcatcher says “made in China” on the back. So much for American Indians.

    1. I received one of those dreamcatchers, too. I also thought the “Made in China” sticker a bit hypocritical.

    2. My name is Jackie Rhode and I am an enrolled memeber of the Crow Creek reservation in central SD. I live on the reservation just north (about 30 minutes from) St. Joseph’s in Chaimberlain, many of the children from our reservation attend that school. I am 1/4 Dakota myself and spend much of my time helping my family keeping my home open for the children who live around me. I try as best I can by God’s grace to teach about the Lord and be there for anyone. I don’t speak for all of us but just myself. I personally have very mixed feelings about the school while I see it helping many of our children and providing much to them in terms of material things, opportunites they would not otherwise have and teaches them many things.
However I also see problematic things. Not the least of which is something you allude to.
As you have seen that dreamcatcher came from China, even those who do make dreamcatchers (and there are a great many craft items that are made by Native people at St. Joseph’s) often sell their items to the school which the school then marks up for thier own profit at a much higher rate than we would sell for. One thing you should be aware of is that there is a law called the Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990
(http://www.doi.gov/iacb/act.html) This act requires that vendors show proof that a Native Artist has produced this item, failure to show this proof or misrepresent at item as “indian” without proper credit to Native artists or vendors carries up to a 5 year prision term and up to $250,000 fine. You can report such violations to the Better Buisness Bearu. This law protects not only you but us as well so that Natives are able to share our arts fairly and be farily paid and given credit for our work. One of my uncles for example does amazing beadwork and it is always wonderful to be able to help each other out by buying locally made beadwork instead of going to stores that mark up and get substanderd merchandise.
Also just to let you know dreamcatchers are not traditional to the Lakota people as they were orginally part of the Ojibwa culture (orginally further north MN area) and only became popular during the pan-Indian movements of the 1970’s. This was a time when many Natives were trying to fight for reintroduction of our culture and civil rights. As it became merged with the new age movement, dreamcatchers have been seen by some as overcomcerilized.

The school like many places tends to overemphize the negative and use it to show what they are doing. I see this in many places and in many culutres. I can tell you that for those who would have eyes to see it, the reservation is a beautiful land, but it is a place where through many reasons, both internally and externally we have many issues. Yes, poverty exisits, but I also see a richness of heart that I think far exceeds anything that any money can buy. I see a strength of character and a great deal of respect and many wonderful things that we have to offer just as each person does.

This is not unlike anywhere else and while our issues may seem many we also have a great many strengths. One thing that saddens me is for people to think that Natives were once this or that. We still are a great many things. Artists, musicans, mechanics and most of all men and women just like you with families and lives that face joy and pain. The greatest need and hope I have for my family and people is that first we should come to know Christ. People have thrown money for years at this or that cause but until you get in with hands and feet and really live with and love people as God does can you see the true joy and hope of Christ changing a life.

Please remember that issues are often more complex that a simple “help these poor people and buy this” statement. The most meaningful thing I could ask is that you would pray for me and my family and people because at the end of the day if I can live following Christ and love those around me, no matter who they are, then it will be a well lived life in the beautiful reservation I call home.

  5. My husband is big on the “Made in the USA” label he only wants Christmas presents the one year Made in USA I’m big on the carbon print we leave behind My cause is much easier. There was only one thing this year I could find for our dog. When I went to buy a new US Flag last year it took me more than 2 months. Looking for that was such a sad thing. I did find one and hung it proudly.

  6. I had to replace the turn signal switch in my 1994 Ford pickup a couple weeks ago. Thinking it was a ‘dealer item only’, I went to my local Ford parts counter and paid $197.00 (tax included) for the part. A few days later I was in a local parts store buying new wiper blades and asked the parts person if they would have a turn signal switch for my pickup. They said they could have it here in two days, for $59.00. My first thought was to take the Ford motor part back, but quickly changed my mind and turned down the offer to order the cheaper on. My thought was right, the one made in America, was the one purchased from the Ford dealer. I kept it, and proudly had it installed. Made in the Great United States of America does it every time, in my wallet. JLH

    1. Doesn’t it bother anyone else that “American business” is costing a hard-working American $138 more? There has to be a better way to more equally share the costs of supporting the American economy at large than demanding that American consumers purchase higher-cost products, particularly at a time when many American families are struggling to survive financially. If American businesses are going to ask us to invest in them, then I want American business to invest in us, too – and I haven’t seen too many articles or tv specials talking about how American businesses are doing that.

      1. You can thank the American government for that! They are regulating and taxing our businesses right out of business! Between the government and the unions I am surprised we have any businesses still left in this great country!!

      2. I feel that if more Americans bought more American made products, then there won’t be such a price gap. More importantly, bring down the price of the American made product.

  7. A lot of products don’t say where they were made, they say “distributed by”. I had some store brand vegetables in my cabinet that didn’t have an expiration date. I called the head office of the store and asked about it. The lady told me there is a code on the can that tells when it was made. How do I find out the expiration date? Call the company and give them the code. Then I asked her what company canned the store brand. She told me a major brand name. Then I asked WHERE they were canned. She said “Mexico”. Nowhere on the can does it say where it was canned. I thought regulations required an expiration date and where something was made. I guess “distributed by” gets companies out of revealing just how much is being produced in other countries.

    1. We never buy anything that says “distributed by” since that is just some coverup for a foreign product. All USA products will state either Made in US or the specific state. We never buy food at Walmart but instead support local grocers.

  8. With the bad economy and being out of work, many times, replacement is a problem. So, why not do what our ancestors did, repair it?
Here in Las Vegas, where the summer sun is harsh, it destroys the vinyl straps on the outdoor chaise lounges, making them uncomfortable and unsafe to sit on. Without a budget to buy a replacement, which probably would not match the original set, I started thinking “how can I fix this problem?”
After several attempts, I designed a metal platform, flexible for comfort, precision laser cut, to provide the spring action, powder coated to prevent rusting, adjustable on each side to fit most sizes of chaise lounges or patio chairs.
This kit designed and built in the America, will restore the chaise lounge or patio chair to full comfort and safety, and it will last for years.

  9. I would purchase made in America but I usually find made in America products cause me grief. Just yesterday, again another problem, air compressor recall. It’s nice to say purchase American but the quality has to be there. So far in most case I have not seen the quality. And when the quality is recognized the price is unaffordable, for me. I’m all for American but…

  10. I believe in buying US made products. While still working for Customs. One importer came to the office. We asked him why his price on one shirt was $45, when it cost him $6/dz. He said, “If I sell it cheap, the Americans might think it is junk, so I sell high and some buy but some wait for sail. I still make money!” So, do we blame others? The change has to come from us. And you are right, if we want to help solve the economic problems, then we have to do our part. Thanks for allowing us to share our thoughts. More power to you Diane!

  11. Normally I drink Starbucks coffee in the morning. I overheard a man order green tea the other day. I knew the health benefits of green tea so I ordered it today. Then, I remembered the benefit of honey so I asked for some honey to go with my green tea. Low and behold, I looked at the honey packets and the honey came from AMERICA. The honey was SO, SO good! It was exceptional. I’d been using other honey lately so I KNEW it was thick and flavorful! The packet says the company is DIAMOND CRYSTAL BRANDS. The honey packet says it is FLAVOR FRESH, 100% Grade A, Product of USA . The company is located in SAVANNAH, GEORGIA. Please give them KUDOS for being a company in American. I am going to share all the companies that make American products with my Second Graders. When I return from Spring Vacation we will start a letter writing compaign to congratulate these companies for making us proud that they make things in America. We are very proud of and LOVE our country!! Can you send me a list of the companies you’ve located so far and their addresses!

A very dedicated and proud to be an American teacher,

    1. If you will use search engines online and type in “made in america” you’ll find many many lists. Or if you have a specific item, say a barbeque grill” just type that in followed by the words “made in ameria”. When we buy clothes from places like Bass Pro or Cabella’s, we look to see where made.

    2. Thank God for YOU, teacher, MADE IN AMERICA! Keep up the good work! Your words give me hope for our future…the children you teach.

  13. I am a HS Business Teacher and we had this very discussion about the fact that most of the products we use on a day-to-day basis are NOT made in the USA. In fact, one of my students actually had on a U.S.A. shirt and we checked, and sure enough, it was NOT made in the US, rather, it was made in Hondurus. Crazy stuff. I truly believe that our country will recover.

  14. One of many reasons why I will continue to purchase conventional books at stores rather than e-Readers that come from China. From the manufacturing to the sales, Americans still benefit…for now. It’s far easier to buy a book or a magazine made in the USA than it is a shirt. And as far as being “green”, when my book’s life is ready to end after being handled by multiple hands, it goes right in the recycle bin to start a new life as something else. So, go ahead, buy a book today. Keep America at work.

  15. I own a 1993 Saturn SL1 that just turned over 283K miles, and the MPG based on last night’s fill-up is 36.96MPG. In 1993 Saturn was a 100% American made car, and after 18 years, with regular maintenance, it still looks and runs perfectly. Most cars today are either hybrids with foreign parts or totally foreign. Until another completely 100% American made car comes along, I’ll be buying parts from the salvage yard. I bought my car because it’s American made, and I buy only American made goods. It’s tough, but definitely worth it.

  16. We have a family business in Jupiter fl., manufacturing aluminum products such as; wagons, carts, tables and trellises. We understand the importance of our sales, it immediately effects how many people we hire. Made in USA means better built not more expensive.

  17. I commend all our American friends for their concerns about, and actions on behalf of “Buying American” as much as possible. (Anyone who has tried to eliminate off-shore stuff from their carts lately will find it almost impossible.)

Many of us have the same concerns here in Canada. We are a much smaller player than the US in most manufacturing markets. Nevertheless, and despite a general lack of awareness of this in the US, we have historically been America’s largest trading partner. We buy from you; you buy from us . . .

So when you decide to “Buy American”, you might want to consider making a mutiually-favourable exception and include some “Buy Canadian” in there too. It is, and has been, in both our interests for many, many years. And, we’ll do the same for you . . .

    A Proud Canadian

    P.S. Go Canuks!

  18. You have to look at the big picture! Union’s always have and always will drive the cost higher on items made in America. Until that problem is solved and with this down economy, I’m going cheap!

    1. Obviously you have a job. Take a look at what is happening to wages. The job I did for 30 years and made $50,000 a year now will happily make me maybe half. Unions protect us from greedy, mean, advantage taking employers. Unions are NOT the problem, greed is the problem. Cheap is sad. I have been out of work for 31 months and I still have enough to buy AMERICAN. Maybe you go to China and work there if you find it is so much better?

  19. American built water heaters. Mine went yesterday after 5 years into a 10 year warranty like many others. Many electrical components are from many good countries which we should support. Issue is that the tank, compressor, and fan failures, some of which are made in US, are not what we as a Nation should accept. Same with other appliances. All friends say that. This is a TAX on low income people who do not have the resources to replace or repair these essential items. I am a retired govern/mil old guy. How can we get non-big-city people kids, men and women into the life they expect?

  20. Let’s ask our grade school children to write something about “What America Means To Me” My 6th grade son did such an amazing poem back in 1970. It still seems appropriate today. His poem follows:

    If only America could be,
A clean and safe place for you and me.
An end to rioting, fears, litter and wars,
So people could safely open their doors.
    No more chaos,no more sorrow,
Peace and Tranquility for a brighter tomorrow.

I thought that was so insightful for a 12 year old. Incidentially, he still believes in America!!!

  21. I drive a Chevy Malibu and just found out it is only 75% made in the USA and am dissapointed but looking at some of the American made cars including other GM’s I guess I am lucky even though all I see are foriegn cars around me on the road. I never owned a Jap car as I saw as a kid in the 60’s to many WWII movies with the Japs slothorring our forefathers in the Pacific. I have always driven Fords or Gm’s and have never been let down so why are there so many foriegn nameplate cars sold in the USA are they precieved better??

  22. Hello ABC-

I’m hoping the t-shirts you gave out to everyone who showed up with a Made in America item were also Made in America – not just screened in America.

  23. Hello ABC,

It’s great to see someone paying attention, although getting traction is difficult. We have manufactured our sustainable products since 2002, always in the Midwest. We resisted the wave of off-shoring, but that seems to mean very little as many people look at the price, not where it’s made. Ironically our biggest market is in Europe because we’re certified sustainable and in Europe they take that seriously. And the Europeans really do love quality American products!

In our industry many consumers prefer the Asian products because they’re $0.25 cheaper, even though they admit they break easy. And the big box stores that advertise “Made In America” told us their margins were bigger with the Asian products and refused to carry us.

We have always believed in investing in local communities for producing our products, too bad we’re part of a small group of believers in the trenches in U.S. manufacturing.

Until we start supporting our local manufacturing and change our “disposable” mentality our local economies will continue to suffer and the overseas suppliers will continue to grow, along with our nation’s trade debt.

  24. Are we Americans as dumb as we appear — or — is it that we just do not think. The Chinese, knowingly and intentionally, export inferior and even toxic products and dangerous toys and goods to be sold in American markets. 70% of Americans believe that the trading privileges afforded to the Chinese should be suspended. Why do you need the government to suspend trading privileges? DO IT YOURSELF, AMERICA !! Simply look on the bottom of every product you buy, and if it says ‘Made in China ‘ or ‘PRC’ (and that now includes Hong Kong ), simply choose another product, or none at all. You will be amazed at how dependent you are on Chinese products, and you will be equally amazed at what you can do without.
Who needs plastic eggs to celebrate Easter? If you must have eggs, use real ones and benefit some American farmer. Easter is just an example. The point is do not wait for the government to act. Just go ahead and assume control on your own. THINK ABOUT THIS: If 200 million Americans each refuse to buy just $20 of Chinese goods, that’s a billion dollar trade imbalance resolved in our favor…fast!! Most of the people who have been reading about this matter are planning on implementing this on Aug. 1st and continue it until Sept. 1st. That is only one month of trading losses, but it will hit the Chinese for 1/12th of the total, or 8%, of their American exports. Then they might have to ask themselves if the benefits of their arrogance and lawlessness were worth it. Remember, August 1st to Sept. 1st !!!!!! START NOW. Support American Made Products!!!!!! If we can’t live without cheap Chinese goods for one month out of our lives, WE DESERVE WHAT WE GET!
Well instead of doing it for just 1 month why not try to do it all the time

  25. To: Diane Sawyer Re: Made in USA
Your continuing Made in America series–very interesting. I’m wondering why you haven’t
made mention of the President’s job czar, Jeffrrey Emmelt, closing an x-ray plant in Wisc.
    and moving it to China.

  26. The US Government probably has the biggest purchasing Dept. In the World… What percent of the products purchased with our Tax Dollars, is made in America??
    C. Gautreau

    1. Very little, and the government pays the third party american investors, that import the products (usually a friend or family member of a politician) a substantial price (must be at least 500% if you look at the purchase orders).

  27. A large part of the reason American workers are reduced to purchasing staple products from third world countries, can be found when one compares the average workers’ wages to those of the top management executives. The responsibities and resulting pressures borne by top management are certainly deserved of higher compensation, but 200+ times that of their average employee? I think not. And what about the lack of performance of many CEO’s, iincluding but not limited to so called Captains of Industry like those of Boeing, the oil industry, big box retailers, Microsoft ,telecommunication firms, and last but certainly not least, our elected leaders at all levels (consider their self-awarded salaries and benefits) and their appointed lackeys and stooges.
Corporate and government greed, power seeking and lack of social responsibility and a moral compass have led us to where we are. To quote Walt Kelley’s Pogo character: “We have met the enemy, and he is us.”

  28. I am so fed up going to Wal-Mart, Sears, Target, etc., and seeing everything, but I mean everything “made in china” and other countries. This is so ridiculous. Here I have a list of gasoline stations that do not import from other countries, but when it comes to clothing, kitchen items, bath items and other items that are too much to mention here and right now, they all say china, or some other country. All I want is to find out the names of stores that carry USA products, items, etc. Thank you Diane Sawyer for all your help.

    1. I, too, found myself fed up with the made-anywhere-else-but-USA on everything I looked at in the stores you mentioned. I gave up too easily and bought it anyway. Thanks to Diane’s special, I want to try harder using hers and other’s resources to search harder to find my USA made products.

      1. I probably spent 30 minutes one day looking for a TOOTHBRUSH made in the USA. I sat and read every.single.one, looking for the country of origin. I was disappointed to find none 🙁 Protor & Gamble which I know has a location in Ohio, didn’t even have a toothbrush made in America. I ended up going with one made in Germany. Same deal with paintbrushes. I could NOT find one made in America. Very disappointed that corporate America is more intereted in lining their pockets with more money than they are the country they live in. IBM and American Greetings, I know first hand, are selling out to the Chinese. They would rather increase profits than get quality products.

  29. In the late 60’s when I lived in Missouri, I knew a man who worked at a Chevrolet plant and worked on the assembly line making over $35/hr. (union job). I have no idea what salaries and benefits union workers were making during the recent recession (40+ years later.) But I do know a friend who is happy to work hard at a local Wendy’s for $7.+/hr. (no benefits) and cheer up the customers who drop in each day. Clearly the unions and their leaders’ greed have in large part driven many of our manufacturers to seek workers who will gladly work for a price which will keep retail prices at a level most Americans are willing to pay. But let us not forget how out-of-control CEO salaries of some large firms have grown! Many manufacturers have understandably moved to right-to-work states where unions do not hold sway over manufacturers. Why, oh, why was the Saturn plant in TN closed? We have an SL-1 and a newer Vue, both of which are giving us excellent service for a reasonable price!

  30. Diane: Kudos to you!!!! the college catalog could be the beginning of something great. It looks like a great opportunity to me. Also Kudos for that smart little college gal for coming up with this idea. There is always hope

    Why not all catalogs??????

  31. Not sure anyone has ever pursued this thought… but think it would be a great idea for American made manufacturers to help consumers by printing on their products in huge letters,, or affixing a sticker with an american flag that is easy to see,, MADE IN AMERICA…………..because as a shopper I cannot always see the little small letters,, way on the back of the package, hidden from view where the product is made. Thanks for listening. PM

The Boys Scouts of America! All most all of the BSA products in all counsel strores through out this great country are made in China! All uniforms , Hats, pants belt buckels, and socks and shirts. Also merit badges and even the most prised “Eagle Scout Badge” are made in China!
Outraged call your local BSA counsel or write to there web site and ask why? Write the National head quaters in Texas and ask Why?
Doubt what I am saying? Visit a counsel store open to the public and see for your self. Are you involved in this wondeful program I was. I was and still love the B S A,my son is an Egale Scout . The BSA is the largest youth orginaztion in America. It is a uniformed orginization. Look on the back of your uniform shirt, Your sons read it. Just think of how many Americans would be at work today if that shirt was made here in America.

    Thank you

The people need to come together with ideas WDC isn’t . 5000 votes will get this heard.

  34. It is about time. This is one of the smartest comments I have heard in a long long time. Maybe now people will listen. Thanks Diane

  35. tHANK YOU FOR YOUR DRIVE TO BUY USA. i RECENTLY ORDERED A FOOD SAVER AND WHEN IT ARRIVED ON THE FRONT OF THE BOX IN BOLD LETTERS WERE THE WORDS MADE IN CHINA. i IMMEDIATELY CALLED THE UPS DRIVER AND ASKED HIM TO SEND IT BACK. wHEN HE TOOK IT OUT OF THE HOUSE, i WASHED THE FLOOR WHERE IT HAD LAIN. i ALSO WILL NOT GO ANYWHERE NEAR A WALMART STORE—-THEY HAVE THEIR PLKANTS IN CHINA AND i REFUSE TO CONTAMINATE MYSELF OR MY FAMILY.L ai PURCHASE ONLY GOODS MADE IN USA. I AM PROUD OF MY COUNTRY—-I SERVED THE AIR FORCE DURING THE KOREAN CONFLICT AND SERVED IN KOREA.

  36. Your “Made in America Builder” in Bozeman Montana outclassed, outsmarted, and outperformed all the bickering politicians in Washington by coming up with a solid idea for putting more Americans to work. And he proved it with his calculations and list. Sadly, when his suggestion actually bears fruit and more jobs are created by his approach, the politicians in Washington will take the credit.

  37. I am proud to be an American but i also wen i find made in America it impossibol for me to be able to bay it so exspensive way is this going on , i am very discorage of wath the America is doing to as u are they halping not as. Rita

  38. I thank you and I believe what you are doing on this show is very laudable; I am doing my best to practice what you are encouraging us to do. My only suggestion to you may be change the “logo/banner” to Made in the U.S.A. as is shown on your webpage verses Made in America. There are many countries that make up America, both North and South.
On another note a couple who are friends of our family, made it their mission to buy products made in the U.S.A. last year. This year they took it one step further and started a web site for products that are made in the U.S.A. I have attached the link if you would like to see this site and read “Their Story”. http://AmericanStation.com
    Again, thank you.

  39. I am a new grandmother and all of the newborn clothes mainly are be Carters which are all made in China. Yo need to do an expose on them because they are in all the stores which leave you very little choice for a new mother to dress her newborn. It is a shame that China makes the majority of our babies’ clothes and we don’t have clue as to what maybe going into the fabrics. Please expose Carter’s baby company and what other brands can I buy for my grandchild?

i really like your show on buying american products. keep up the good work on A B C.
    THANKS JOHNNY YOUNG

    1. If you look closer at it, you will find it was only assembled in America, well over 75% of the parts come from outside the US.

  42. disney parent company of abc channel 7 i just came back from disney world in florida every item for sale in gift shops MADE IN CHINA whats up with that you people who are talking about made in america series wake up smell the coffee

  43. These are all great ideas for “buying American” but until we FIX what screwed up the system and sent all the jobs over seas in the first place, this is just a minor patch.

Please, Please, PLEASE, buy the book, “THE FAIR TAX. Read it like you did your college text book or like you read your bible now. Underline the important concepts, high light it, read it again, then pass it along to someone else who loves America like you do.

You will have the greatest “AHAH” moment in your life as you discover what the crooked politicians in Washington DC never intended you discover. The Income Tax, the IRS and all the BS that goes on in DC is not about money. It is about POWER, and them controlling you and your life. Never vote for or support anybody who does not intend to attempt to pass the Fair Tax. Let’s get the crooks back where they belong, working for us and the USA.

Buy the book and you will say to anybody who opens their mouth about taxes, “Read the Book dummy.”

Here is the latest updated revision….

Gift Ideas Designed To “Buy American”.
There are so many possibilities to help keep our resources in the USA to bolster our industries and businesses,…. the list is endless. We don’t need trade restrictions imposed on China or other countries where our jobs have gone …. just start “Buying American” and you have accomplished the same end. Start looking at the label or tag. YOU can make a difference.
Remember to not include shopping mall or specialty store gift cards which do not sell mostly American made goods. ASK.
Here are a few ideas of which some are for local, Seattle, attractions and for which some are pretty generic to any region.
    1. Gift cards for Specialty or Fast Food Restaurants.
    2. Gift certificates for 18 holes at the local Golf Course, Golf Lessons or Driving Range.
    3. Gift certificates for Movie Theatres. (Except AMC, which is now, as of 2012, owned by China).
    4. Gift cards for Grocery Stores.
    5. Gift cards, prepaid credit cards, for Gas Stations.
    6. Tickets to local live Theatre Shows, Plays, Concerts, etc.
    7. Gift cards for Music Downloads: iTune, etc.
    8. Tickets to local sporting events: (College or Pro) Baseball, Soccer, Football, Hockey etc.
    9. Gift cards to Starbucks, Tulleys or other local coffee shops.
    10. Tickets to local Travel & RV, Home & Garden, Arts & Crafts, Fairs or other local events.
    11. Tickets to local Museums, the Zoo or Aquarium.
    12. Domestic Airline gift cards.
    13. Locally (USA) produced specialty foods: Wine, etc.
    14. Certificate for an Oil Change or auto body Detail Service.
    15. Certificate for a Massage, Facial or other such personal service.
    16. Certificate for a stay at a domestic B&B or Resort Hotel.
    17. Certificate for a 4 hour House Cleaning Service.
    18. Cash, designated for College or Trade School expenses.
    19. Gift cards for local “Made in Washington” stores or your local Domestic Products Crafts Store.
    20. Gift certificates for the local Amusement Park, Water Park or Family Entertainment Center.
    21. Annual Entertainment Discount Coupon Books, available by city/area.
    22. Donations, in someone’s name, if they so request, to their Favorite Charitable Program.
    23. Prepaid Bus Fare Cards for those riding the bus to work or school.
    24. Ski Lift Passes or Ski/Snowboarding Lessons.
    25. Gift certificates to a local Plant Nursery.
    26. Certificate for 4 hours Landscape Maintenance.
    27. Certificate for a “Whale Watch” boat excursion or “Harbor Tour” excursion.
    28. “Underground Seattle” tour gift certificates.
    29. “Ride The Ducks” Seattle & Lake Union tour certificates.
    30. Seattle Center “Music Experience” annual pass certificates.
    31. Certificates for White Water Rafting trip.
    32. Gift Certificate for a Trap or Skeet shoot at a local gun range.
    33. Certificate for a family session at a local Bowling Alley or for Bowling Lessons.
34, 35 ………. (Add your suggestions…………and circulate this list back to everyone ).
This is the third issue of this e-mail and thanks to your input, it keeps getting longer.
Do a little research on the internet for companies or products Made In America. More of such information is becoming readily available as this effort is becoming a ground swell in our country.
Next visit to your favorite store, ask which of the items they sell are American made and If none, shop elsewhere. Add your findings to this list and send it out to your entire e-mail address book…. me included.
It was recently estimated that if all of those who buy Christmas gifts would divert just $64 from imported items to items made in America or local services, etc., once each year, that 200,000 permanent jobs would be created in this country to fill that increased demand.
How many more “Buy Ameircan” ideas can you add to this list? Please e-mail me and everyone, with your added ideas…
….Don’t forget to keep this going …. ….by forwarding it to everyone on your e-mail list immediately!
(Keep this list handy as a reference for when you are looking to buy someone a gift, me included).
Start looking at the label or tag.

  44. I just want to say that everybody is talking about manufacturing jobs lost to China. How about IT jobs? I have been out of work for 2 1/2 years now. My job has been outsourced to India and/or Pakistan. We can do a better job here, they’re just cheaper, and the quality suffers. We need to bring back the IT jobs here in America as well!

    1. Begin bringing back IT jobs by asking to talk to a tech in the USA every time you call for assistance. Refuse to talk to outsourced techs.

  45. I began buying all USA made a few years ago when I noticed that all the clothing I was buying came from China. I looked up their policies about pesticides in clothing and ect and was so shocked to find out that garments and shoes made there are toxic! I went through my drawers and closets and threw it all away. Now Im on the hunt to replace all those clothes with made in USA. I already found shoes and boots (only costing me about 20.00 more per pair…I can handle that) but clothing that fits right (Im petitie) is much harder and most of the made in USA clothing right now looks rather utilitarian. Im considering making my own clothes and hiring a tailor. Funny also how JoAnns and other fabric stores stopped carrying a lot of patterns for clothing about the same time that all of our factories moved east…..hmmm…..So I am on a quest to see if I can replace every single thing in my house with USA merchandise. I urge everyone out there to do the same as much as you can and when you stop shopping at a certain store because you cant find made in USA, please remember to write them a letter and tell them why you stopped shopping there. Cheap price cannot ever make up for shoddy/toxic merchandise!!

  46. My wife and I and another couple drove from Arizona to Florida last Febuary to attend the NASCAR Daytona race. NASCAR calls it “THE ALL AMERICAN RACE”. We went to the souvenir shop at the race way to buy some T-shirts, hats, or other articals of our favorite drivers. As we were looking them over I noticed everything was made in China. We put all our idems down and walked out. I have written several E mails to the different race CAR OWNERS and Daytona race way but I never received and replys, I even wrote one to ABC news and never had any reply. It’s sad that these items can’t be made in America. We all know they could be made in America it just takes some effort on the race car owners. I don’t see any of there cars being sponcered by companies in china, why are the car owners supporting our workers, that’s the ones buying the tickets to watch the races. Outsourcing to china isn’t very American.

    1. It is sad that no Made in USA items were found. Please Please PLEASE read “The Fair Tax Book” to discover the real reason the jobs went overseas. I am a small business owner and having just done the payroll I can assure you none of my employees are happy with the tax raise they got on the first of the year. Everyone here makes $8.00 an hour and saw the pay check go down by $80.00 a month and before somebody gets on me for paying so little, I have not gotten a paycheck in the 7 years I have been in business. Obama is ruining the country and nobody is paying attention.

    2. Not only isn’t it very American to buy made in China merchandise to sell to their fans, it is un-American. The only way we will return our manufacturing jobs to the USA is to buy Made in the USA and boycott businesses that refuse to provide Made in the USA in their retail outlets.
